This is not an endorsement of the Martingale, just merely an explanation of when someone might knowingly place a bet on Big 6 or 8, knowing it is an inferior bet. So while Big 6 or Big 8 is an inferior bet to the Place 6/8 or Buy 6/8 bet, one might bet Big 6 or Big 8 if they were, for example, playing a Martingale and wanted to increase the bet on 6 or 8 and had the maximum bet on Place and Buy bets. Remember, though, that 7 is the most frequent number thrown in craps. The Iron Cross strategy may not have the lowest house edge, but it is fun to play if you want frequent wins. The only time you would bet the Big 6 or Big 8 is if you have maxed out your other bets on the Place and Buy bets and want to put more money on 6 or 8 or both. Place 6 and Place 8 have a house edge of 0.46 per roll, much lower than The Iron Cross. So the Big 6 or Big 8 is an inferior bet.
That means you put your chip in the box yourself to make the bet. If an 8 is rolled the Place bet pays $7, while the Big 8 pays $6. These are self-service bets that you make yourself without help from the dealer. So lets look at the outcome of a Place 8 bet vs a Big 8 bet
Put a bet on the Big 6 or Big 8 and get paid even money (an amount equal to what you bet, not more like the Place 6 or 8). Place 6 and 8, get paid more than your bet ($7 for every $6 bet). You have seen the answers.they are correct
